12 Composition Commissions

Musiktheatertage Wien, Austria

Musiktheatertage Wien is an international festival for future-oriented musical drama projects which, following its inception, has successfully established itself as a key complement to those (also contemporary) opera formats produced by theaters as well as large independent groups and international music festivals in Vienna and Austria. The festival has also positioned itself as a forum for new music theater works boasting a high degree of formalistic freedom. In 2019, nine music theater productions will be staged in 19 performances by national and international artists at WUK WIEN between September 12 and 21. Two music theater interventions featuring short works by several composers on the festival’s focal theme MYTHOS ZIVILISATION (MYTH OF CIVILIZATION) complete the comprehensive program. These two installative projects with works by established and young composers will be realized in collaboration with students of dramaturgy (Vienna University of Music) and set design (Anna Viebrock’s fine art class in Vienna). With the support of the EvS Music Foundation, commissions for 2019 have been issued to the composers Jorge Sánchez-Chiong (VE/AT), Bertl Mütter (AT), Yiran Zhao (CN), Hovik Sardanyan (AM), Raphaele Grimaldi (IT), Evan Gardner (USA), Roberta Lazo Valenzuela (CL), Jury Everhartz (DE/AT), Carola Bauckholt (DE), Eva Reiter (AT), Angel Hernández Lovera (VE) and Magdalena Ferek-Petric (AT/HR).
