Composition Commission to Carola Bauckholt

Dal Niente New Music, NFP, Chicago, USA

Carola Bauckholt is writing a 17 to 20 minute piece for mixed instrumentation ensemble of thirteen players plus conductor. The premiere will be produced in partnership with the DePaul University of School of Music, where Dal Niente was recently named the school’s resident new music ensemble, and also where Carola recently spent one week as the guest composer for the organizations’ inaugural Summer Residency for New Music. Carola´s music has rarely entered the ears of American audiences, and this commission will be the first by an American ensemble. The framing will be a Proximity Concert – Dal Niente’s regular portrait concert series in which the composer helps curate the program. The new work will appear alongside three of Carola’s existing works: her intermedia piece Oh, I see, her solo theater-vocal piece, Vakuum Lieder, and an earlier ensemble piece Mehr Oder Weniger, as well as two works of her choosing, depending on the commissioned piece. Dal Niente’s selected Carola for this project in response to the perceived need to confront and influence the US side of the conversation regarding music, theater, found and/or translated natural sounds, and composer-performer collaboration.
