Composition Commission to Diana Soh, Hannes Kerschbaumer, Francesca Verunelli und Maurizio Azzan

Diana Soh, Hannes Kerschbaumer, Francesca Verunelli and Maurizio Azzan

SchallfeldEnsemble, Graz, Austria

SchallfeldEnsemble is an international contemporary music ensemble based in Graz. It is distinguished by its programming, which focuses on young composers, its innovative concert productions and its work with live electronics and collective improvisations. The motto of the current composition commissions in the 2019/20 season is "Die Zeit und ihre Geister" and these fit seamlessly into the work of the ensemble in its endeavors to bring the music of international composers, especially of the young and middle generation, to Austria. The ensemble cultivates a long-term artistic collaboration with the composers it commissions. Sponsored by the EvS Music Foundation in 2019, the composition commissions of the Schallfeld Ensemble include a modular concert project (Diana Soh), a piece for ensemble and live electronics (Hannes Kerschbaumer), a string trio (Francesca Verunelli) and a work of musical theater (Maurizio Azzan). Lorenzo Derinni is the artistic project manager. Diana Soh's composition "of small things" will be a modular piece in which each part can be played individually, in different combinations or in a full ensemble. Hannes Kerschbaumer is to compose a work created for the program "overload and emptiness" to be performed at Wien Modern in early November 2019, meticulously integrating electronics and instrumental ensemble. Francesca Verunelli's String Trio will be a chamber music composition dealing with the microtonal shifts between the flageolet tones of the piano and those of the untuned violin. The music theater project "Ariadne" by Maurizio Azzan combines operatic references with electronics in an intimate setting.
