Composition Commission issued to Christian Mason

Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, United Kingdom

In his composition commission for the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group Christian Mason deals with the relationships between humanity, nature and the divine. For 30 instrumentalists, a choir and five vocal soloists the composer will examine the musical metaphors of aborescence, organic growth and transformation with a libretto by Paul Griffiths. Alongside the premiere the program will be rounded off with a work by Samantha Fernando, who explores trees in her compositions, and the British premiere of Helmut Lachenmann’s Concertini. The concert in Birmingham will bring together musicians and composers of different generations presenting to the audience such topics as nature and climate change. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is funding the composition commission issued to Christian Mason, a recipient of the foundation’s Composers’ Prize in 2015.
