Composition Commission issued to Gordon Kampe

Hochschule für Musik/HfM Nürnberg, Nuremberg, Germany

New Music and its very latest examples should form part of conductor training and so also feature as part of a conducting competition. For this reason, a new competition CAMPUS II organized by German universities has commissioned Gordon Kampe with the writing of a new work especially for the event, with the support of the EvS Music Foundation. This will be the compulsory piece for all twelve candidates in the first round to be held on January 21, 2019. The young conductors will receive the work only about six weeks before the competition and must furthermore manage without today’s usual recording aids when developing their work. This will help them reinforce their own interpretative skills without regard for any previous performances. Kampe is planning his composition as a kind of “étude for conducting” that will contain technical and tonal challenges. CAMPUS II will be held in three rounds. The second and third rounds will be performed with Nuremberg’s professional orchestras and the concluding concert will be held on January 26 in the main building of the Staatstheater.
