Composition Commission issued to Johannes Kalitzke

Carinthian Summer Music Festival, Austria

Church opera has been the unique selling point of the Carinthian Summer Music Festival for 50 years now. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation, the composer and conductor Johannes Kalitzke has been commissioned in 2020 with producing a new score for the silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc (Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1928). The film / church opera is more than just a musical backdrop to a silent film and also more than just new music for a church opera. It is both and uses both stylistic devices. On the one hand, there is the silent movie with live music of the orchestra. And, on the other, there is the scenic live experience of singers, choir and staged music theater for the audience. Both are combined in the film / church opera: a silent film on 2-3 screens, live music and scenic parts that interrupt, accompany, comment and contrast the sequences of the silent film. Kristine Tornquist is writing the libretto for the inserted scenes and is also the director.
