Composition Commission issued to Samir Odeh-Tamimi

Musik der Jahrhunderte, Stuttgart, Germany

The tragedy and failure of a multiple personality isolated from society are at the centre of Samir Odeh-Tamimi's music theatre Philoktet. Composed for the Neue Vocalsolisten and the Zafraan Ensemble, the rhythm and melody of ancient Semitic languages and the powerful images of the almost static stage concept convey the archaic nature of the ancient yet disturbingly contemporary myth. Odeh-Tamimi is particularly interested in the character of Philoktet, to whom a multiple psychic identity is attributed in Sophocles' drama, but also in Heiner Müller´s and André Gide´s. Philoktet– the only drama by Sophocles for which no opera has yet been written – will now be the subject of his new music theatre project, which is funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
