Composition Commission issued to Sidney Corbett

Musikalische Akademie, Mannheim, Germany

The Musical Academy of the Nationaltheater-Orchester Mannheim e.V. is a society founded by orchestra members that organizes its own subscription concert series, the “Akademiekonzerte”, independently of the National Theater’s programming and funding. The Musical Academy has traditionally issued composition commissions since the 1990s, mostly with special reference to Mannheim’s musical history. Successful premieres of past seasons include commissioned works by Detlev Glanert, Aribert Reimann, John Corigliano, Giselher Klebe, Moritz Eggert, Fazil Say, Richard Danielpour, Alissa Firsova and Oscar Strasnoy. In the 2019/20 concert season Sidney Corbett will be premiering a new work under the guidance of General Music Director Alexander Soddy in the Mozartsaal at Rosengarten Mannheim.
Born in Chicago in 1960, Sidney Corbett studied music and philosophy at the University of California, San Diego, Yale University as well as at Hamburg’s University of Music under György Ligeti. Since 1985 Corbett has primarily worked in Europe. His works, comprising stage, orchestral, instrumental, solo and vocal literature, have won numerous prizes and awards both at home and abroad and are performed the world over. Since 2006 Sidney Corbett has been Professor of Composition at Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts where he also runs the Forum für Neue Musik.
