Composition Commissions issued to Iris ter Schiphorst and Milica Djordjevic

Klangverein Stuttgart, Germany

"How do you set life and desires to music and lyrics? What is a life, what is a work? How does it read, how does it sound?" asks Büchner Prize winner and writer Felicitas Hoppe. How does something like a narrative force reveal itself in the dramaturgy of new compositions? In what musical echo chambers are lyrical, narrative voices to be found? Ensemble ascolta and Literaturhaus Stuttgart bring together the artists Felicitas Hoppe and Iris ter Schiphorst as well as Anja Kampmann and Milica Djordjevic for a joint project that explores new ways of artistic, transmedial communication and seeks to explore a new space. This space has parallels with an exchange of letters, but is structured in a literary-musical way. The result is a dialogue in two languages that actually aims at an exchange instead of reciprocal illustration. From the conceptual framework and the willingness of two arts to engage in dialogue, the theme of the conversations feeds and pushes the two couples to the limits of what they can say with their respective mediums: They respond out of their arts and their expressive possibilities, entering into a relationship. The composition commissions to Iris ter Schiphorst and Milica Djordjevic are funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
