Composition Commissions issued to Sandeep Baghwati and Mithatcan Öcal

With the concert installation mimesis::imitatio, Lotte Greschik and Claudia van Hasselt, together with the Adapter and Lux:NM ensembles in collaboration with FemaleSingersUnited, will be examining the concepts of mimesis and imitation in the context of trans-traditional contemporary music.

Distortion of reality in music is an issue to be explored in the commissioned works by Amen Feizabadi, Sandeep Baghwati, Sarah Nemtsov and Mithatcan Öcal. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the composition commissions issued to Öcal and Baghwati. All composers will explore both the handling of extra-musical mimesis and the mimetic structures within music. So how does the phenomenon of imitation behave within the context of trans-traditional contemporary music? What spaces open up for and through the mimetic within the inner-musical and compositional structure as well as via extra-musical influences?
