Sonar Quartet, Berlin, Germany

By developing a unique microtonal playing practice, the Sonar Quartet creates a basis for further evolving the phenomenon of tuning beyond the occidental repertoire. The freedom this provides to master tonal systems without the dictates of a composer aims to pave the way to elevating this rather impenetrable field to the level of a “tradition” of the future. Together with Sofia Labropoulou (Kanun) the Sonar Quartet is commissioning new works by John Psathas and Stefan Pohlit. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is facilitating the ensemble’s development of microtonal playing practice.
