Five Composition Commissions

Klangforum Wien, Austria

The enforced absence from the stage due to the current pandemic has opened up unexpected space for reflection for Klangforum Wien in the 35th year of its existence. Intensified by the temporary lockdown its members became especially aware of what it means to be part of a soloist ensemble. With the project SOLO Klangforum Wien has clawed back some sovereignty over their own action achieving a new intensity for their own instruments in the free exploration of a work. In the triangle between composer, instrument and performer Klangforum Wien portrays the notion of the SOLO in a wide variety of ways. In each SOLO work the levels of meaning of “solitude”, “individualism” and of the “outstanding” oscillate in a special way. In a work for solo instrument the composers sound out the very depths of its nature while the musicians experience new horizons for their own instruments in these works. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is facilitating the composition commissions issued to Olga Neuwirth, Rebecca Saunders, Toshio Hosokawa, Salvatore Sciarrino and George Aperghis.
