Kompositionsauftrag an Martin Smolka

Over the past few decades categories like concert, scenic and film music, the multimedia and sacred and secular music have come under increasing doubt and have become somewhat unusable. In search of new concert formats many discoveries and experiments have been made during this time. What happens when the stage becomes too cramped for a composer? Or if an acoustically flexible but visually inert situation suddenly starts moving? If the exercising musicians step out from behind the music as people and the levels of portrayal and perception begin to falter? For many years now ascolta has discussed these facets in a loose sequence with composers and has received some both surprising and multifaceted pieces, for instance from Simon Steen-Andersen, Elena Mendoza, Jennifer Walshe, Francesco Filidei and Rolf Riehm. In their attempt to address the outlined theme ensemble ascolta will, among other things, issue a composition commission to the Czech composer Martin Smolka who is being supported by the EvS Music Foundation. Together with the author and director Jiří Adamek Smolka will develop a musical theater project lasting an entire evening with the working title Damit die Zeit nicht stehen bleibt (To stop time standing still) for the seven ascolta musicians that will include texts by F. Kafka, D. H. Thoreau and J. Adamek.
