ombres lucides – Composition Commission issued to Xavier Dayer

ensemble proton bern, Bern, Switzerland

139 is the number of premieres of the latest music already performed by ensemble proton bern – and there are many more to come. With its platform for contemporary music – the protonwerk – the ensemble is aimed at composers that are at the start of their careers. From all these encounters with young composers grows a dense and forward-looking network of relationships throughout the world of New Music. Also of particular importance to the ensemble is their own YouTube channel that makes it possible for viewers to watch and listen to premieres over again. This digital feature is avidly used and opens up new audience bases making it possible for New Music to be independent of time and geography.

As part of their concert series in 2018 the ensemble will be presenting the project “ombres lucides” with the premiere of Geneva-born Xavier Dayer (1972). Supported by the EvS Music Foundation his composition, along with the new work by Catherine Lamb also being premiered here, belong to the kind of music that does not superficially seek contours, but poetically describes the hidden and the concealed. With their works the two young musicians allow listeners to pause on the long dark December days promising them an evening in a sparkling world of shadows.
