Steve Reich meets Gerhard Richter

Britten Sinfonia, Cambridge, United Kingdom

The Britten Sinfonia brings together Steve Reich and Gerhard Richter, two greats of the contemporary music and art scene. The 40-minute silent film by Richter and filmmaker Corinna Belz is presented together with Reich's composition for fourteen instruments. This overarching collaboration is regarded as one of the most unique and dynamic artist collaborations of recent years emphasizing the language shared by music and the visual arts. Reich's strictly repetitive musical structures are combined with Richter's Patterns series. The film project was created with a specially written computer program and premiered in New York City in the summer of 2019. At the European premiere, Steve Reich and Gerhard Richter, accompanied by host, art historian Andrew Graham Dixon, will give a concert introduction. Under the musical direction of Colin Currie, the Britten Sinfonia will be appearing in three concerts financed by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
