Thirty Situations, reprise

Nieuw Ensemble, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Since its foundation almost forty years ago, the Nieuw Ensemble in Amsterdam has been dedicated to contemporary music. Projects with international composers of different generations and styles took the musicians all over the world. At the end of 2019 the ensemble disbanded and performed thirty situations as swan songs. The composer Joël Bons, also a founding member and artistic director, portrays the ensemble's history with this work. The farewell concert was premiered in 2018 at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam and brings these classically trained instrumentalists together with jazz percussionist Tristan Renfrow, a humming singer, electric piano and electric guitar. For the reprise, thirty situations will now be linked with visual art and envisioned through the abstract, colorful and hallucinatory works of the audiovisual artist Tarik Barri. The ensemble thus says its goodbye with a collage that compares detailed fragments with a lasting continuity and which devotes itself to the important questions: What makes something coherent? When will we only experience the fragments? And how important is unity in a piece of music? The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation will be funding these final concerts given by the Nieuw Ensemble.
