Taller de Música Contemporánea, Santiago de Chile

The Encuentro Internacional de Compositores (International Meeting of Composers) in Santiago de Chile has been held every two years since 2004. The goal of this now established institution is the development, dissemination and teaching of contemporary music in Chile. Over the 17 years of its existence, composers such as Emmanuel Nunez, Marco Stroppa, Johannes Schöllhorn, José Manuel López López, Julio Estrada and Luis Naón, as well as musicians like Ian Pace, Pierre Strauch, Mark Knox and the Vortex Ensemble have participated in the meeting. This meeting was initiated by musicians of the contemporary music workshop Taller de Música Contemporánea, one of the first specialized ensembles for contemporary music in Chile. The event is a response to the need for an exchange format between students, professionals and the audience of contemporary music. One of the main aspects of the meeting is the exchange between Chilean and international musicians, which in this edition takes place virtually. In 2020 the Taller de Música Contemporánea will celebrate its 20th anniversary. To mark this occasion, the ensemble and the meeting will focus this year on the human voice in contemporary music. In this context, the voice should not only be seen as a sound source, but above all as a powerful means of communication. In line with this focus one of the meeting’s key aims is to issue a composition commission that brings together the human voice and the possibilities offered by the ensemble. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is facilitating the composition commissions issued to Manuel Contreras and Daniel Osorio.
