NAMES – New Art and Music Ensemble Salzburg, Austria

Ensemble NAMES is hooking up with media artist and programmer Patrik Lechner to design a concert series in which an open source AI definitively designs the various levels of the musical creative process. Technical aspects were presented by Patrik Lechner at the conference The Media, Arts & Design | AI 2020 (mad-conferences.com). For this a neuronal network is being developed and taught to take creative decisions regarding musical design on various levels (composition and performance). The project explores the interplay between artificial intelligence and human creativity. That fine line between complex algorithmics and human creation is to be sounded out here in a tangible, experienceable and aesthetic way and presented for discussion within a three-part concert series. Works by a variety of composers performed by Ensemble NAMES will serve as training data for the machine – whose results and dreams will initially be refined, filtered and adapted for performance by human hand. The concert series is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and presents the relationship between man and technology in an experience and perception-focused form.
