Cut Glass – a Chamber Opera by Hana Ajiashvili

Meitar Ensemble, Tel Aviv, Israel

The Meitar Ensemble has been working in close cooperation with Hana Ajiashvili for fifteen years now performing her works at home and abroad. 2021 will now see the premiere of the chamber opera Cut Glass by the Israeli-Georgian composer.

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story The Cut-Glass Bowl the opera highlights the decline and decadence of the American bourgeoisie at the start of the 20th century. In her musical theater the composer contextualizes history and lodges a sharp critique of contemporary materialistic society. Hana Ajiashvili composes for imaginative instrumentation and electronics, questioning theatrical conventions and breaking through musical and dramatic boundaries between the Meitar Ensemble and the singers. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is facilitating the performance of the chamber opera in Tel Aviv.
