Miller Theatre Composer Portraits

Miller Theatre at Columbia University, New York, United States

Composer portraits have been a fixture at the Miller Theatre for 20 years now. For each full-length concert, both laypeople and experts in New Music are invited to enjoy works by contemporary composers.

In 2020 and 2021 the Miller Theatre will present six composers. To celebrate Helmut Lachenmann's 85th birthday, the series kicks off with four of his compositions performed by the JACK Quartet and Ensemble Signal. The full-length world premiere for electric pianos, piano, bass guitar, percussion, tape machine, turntable, electronics and loudspeakers by Thomas Meadowcroft with Yarn/Wire will be held in November 2020. Matana Robert's Portrait also features a world premiere together with the International Contemporary Ensemble, commissioned by the Miller Theatre. In February 2021, Brazilian composer Felipe Lara with Metafagote for bassoon and works for piano and ensemble will be the focus of attention. The Third Sound makes its debut at the Miller Theatre in Kati Agócs' Portrait in March, where a commissioned work featuring vocalist Lucy Dhegrae will be premiered. The concert series ends with the New York premiere of Luca Francesconi's Trauma Etudes.
