Concerts as Part of the 15th Annual Congress of the Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie (GMTH)

Universität der Künste (UdK) Berlin, Germany

“Gegliederte Zeit” (Structured Time) is the general theme of the 15th annual congress of the music theory society Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie jointly organized by arts university Universität der Künste Berlin and music academy Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin to mark the 25th anniversary of German reunification.
The temporal dimension impacts music in a variety of ways. The congress aims to examine time as a fundamental aspect of music perception alongside the historic contexts in which the musical works and also theories and concepts of music exist. Dovetailing thematically with this two concert events will be held to be supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
On the first evening Berlin’s Cembaloensemble will be presenting Baroque works in arrangements for the unusual line-up of three to five harpsichords. By doing this the ensemble places the works in an entirely new time and space context, allowing the borders between historic performance practice and new composition to blur. A second concert will be given by Ensemble Mosaik, one of the most renowned ensembles for contemporary music in Germany. Their interest focuses on the variety of aesthetic concepts and manifestations within contemporary music.
Both concert evenings aim to echo as many aspects of temporality in music and reflect the theme of “Gegliederte Zeit” or Structured Time above and beyond the lectures on music theater.
