Kaleidoskop’s Tenth Anniversary / The KaleidoLabor I and II – Retrospective and Outlook

Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, Germany

"The magic moment has to be broken. Experiencing magic means servility, but we need sensitivity." Helmut Lachenmann
2016 sees the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop celebrate its tenth birthday. Over this time it has, among other things, explored the development of new concert formats, the relationship between music and space and the appreciation of New Music. In its anniversary season the ensemble will be following on from this work.
To do so two of the concerts supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation will be held in spatially contrasting locations of fine art in Berlin. The first part – in the studio of artist Dirk Bell – is devoted to contemplation of the material and the process of composition. Amongst others, the musicians play sketches from the genesis period of Lachenmann’s "Musique concrète instrumentale" and Beethoven’s String Trio op. 9. The second concert will be held at the contemporary art venue “KINDL – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst”. The spacious exhibition rooms of this former brewery contrast with the intimate setting of the first concert. The evening begins with the performance of Rihm’s “Music for Three Strings”. Following this, the ensemble will then play works, including ones particularly important to its development, at various locations at KINDL. These will form part of a kaleidoscope of sound that every member of the audience can listen to within the space in an evolving and individual way.
The ensemble wishes to sensitize their audience to the diachronic unfolding of works by means of sketches in Lachenmann’s sense so as to experience music in a new way.
