Portrait Concert Series: Edison Denisov, Michael Jarrell & Claude Vivier

ensemble mise-en, Brooklyn, USA

Each concert in ensemble mise-en’s ongoing PORTRAIT series seeks to detail the landmark works of an important composer of contemporary music. In Spring 2016 three such programs are planned with the support of the EvS Music Foundation.

The first concert will profile the work of the enigmatic, complex French Canadian Composer Claude Vivier (1948-1983), whose work has only recently undergone exposure on any grand scale outside his native Quebec and French-speaking Europe. Unusual and unique, ensemble mise-en plans to be an early member of this rebirth of Vivier’s creative output: many of even his most famous works have never been recorded or performed in the United States.

Edison Denisov (1929-1996) was one of the most important composers of the 20th century and one of the most celebrated Russian composers of all time. He will be profiled in the second concert program. Denisov’s career, spanning World War II, the rise and fall of the USSR, the Cold War and the excitement of the immediate post-Communist era, reflects both the wildness of the time and era and his own indisputable creative genius.

Swiss composer Michael Jarrell (b. 1958) forms the focus of the third concert program. He is highly-regarded in Europe as one of the finest and most important composers of his generation. Trained in Geneva, Freiburg and at IRCAM, Jarrell has received a multitude of prestigious awards and is professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna and the Lucerne Festival Academy.

Dress rehearsals for each performance will be held at the respective venues in the hours prior to performance. Ensemble mise-en’s dress rehearsals are always open to interested and enthusiastic members of the concert-going public.
