rainy days 2015 - festival de musique nouvelle

Philharmonie Luxembourg, Luxembourg

How does music create tension? How can you use the medium of music to arouse the audience’s curiosity about how a piece of music will develop? These fundamental questions of musical aesthetics are placed center stage by the 11th edition of the rainy days festival at Philharmonie Luxembourg, entitled “suspense”.
This question is intriguing amongst other things because it has its pitfalls from a dramaturgical perspective: the deafening omnipresence of sensation as “ersatz tension” in a society that has “forgotten the art of expectation”; the polarizing effect of all narratives in the contemporary music discourse; the unpredictability of individual musical expectations in an increasingly fragmented coexistence of musical “languages”. Nevertheless, composers still often manage to build up so much tension in the audience that they sit on the edge of their seats and feel deeply moved internally.
As part of this festival theme, outstanding performers will present works that create musical tension in a remarkable way. For instance, Pierre-Laurent Aimard will play a personal selection of piano works by Stockhausen and Boulez as well as the solo section of Lachenmann’s “Ausklang”. This is the first time since 2007 that two orchestras will be involved in the festival. For instance, the SWR Symphony Orchestra will be holding a concert supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
