WIEN MODERN 2015 – pli selon pli

Wien Modern, Austria

In November 2015 the festival WIEN MODERN will, in its 28th edition, span a compact network of contemporary music across the city. The festive opening on November 5 at Vienna’s Konzerthaus will be held very much in the spirit of the “Grand Masters” of New Music. To mark his 90th birthday the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra will be performing Pierre Boulez’ Pli selon Pli under the direction of Cornelius Master with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. In five movements this compositional milestone of the 20th century offers various solutions to the relationship between music and language in the music of the present day. The composition arising as a “work in progress” between 1957 and 1962 is a musical drama illustrating the life of an artist from birth “don” to death “tombeau”.

This season WIEN MODERN has set itself the task of specifically promoting the younger generation of composers and giving them an international platform. A focal point here examines the interfaces between New Music and progressive pop music. The compositions of the younger generation influenced by popular music are indeed embedded in the music of their time. The aim is to present works of this kind to the audience as part of the festival.
