ZeitRäume Basel 2017 – Biennale für neue Musik und Architektur / Biennale of New Music and Architecture

Verein ZeitRäume Basel, Basel, Switzerland

First organized in 2015 and supported by the EvS Music Foundation, the guiding principles behind ZeitRäume Basel – Biennale of New Music and Architecture are remarkable combinations of music, space and architecture, a focus on new productions as well as openness and accessibility to a wide audience.
In this year’s festival the collaboration between composers and architects plays a more prominent role than in 2015, for instance in the Gitter project with Nadir Vassena, Michael Reudenbach, Rebecca Saunders and Beat Gysin featuring four works for a three-dimensional listening room by the architect Quintus Miller. At the same time, along with compositions by the likes of Luigi Nono, Earle Brown, Roman Haubenstock-Ramati and Hans Wüthrich a conscious decision was made to again present some "classics" of the music of the 20th century as part of the biennale.
Basel is growing in breadth, quality and international reach. This urban planning perspective is a welcome occasion to invite the 2017 festival audience to a spatial broadening of horizons: in the 2017 edition ways, connections and the view into distant horizons are to play an even stronger role than in 2015.
Spatial projects for an audience in motion, also beyond conventional stages, offer a wide range of events and discoveries in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and also in the three-nation border region around Basel (Switzerland/Germany/France).
