30th Music Biennale Zagreb

Croatian Composers' Society – Music Biennale Zagreb, Croatia

The Music Biennale Zagreb is the oldest and the only festival for contemporary music in Croatia. Since its inception 1961, it has provided a stage for contemporary Croatian music and been a meeting point between the national and international music scenes. Its aims remain unchanged: the presentation of the newest contemporary music productions of the highest quality. The 30th Music Biennale Zagreb takes place from the 6th to the 13th April 2019 and offers over 30 events covering a multitude of different genres in different locations in Zagreb – not just in concert halls and theatres, but also in factory halls, libraries, on public streets and squares. This year, special attention will be given to the two topics of ‘City’ and ‘Music’, thus providing space for disciplines as diverse as multimedia and installation art, acoustic research, discussions on sociology, urbanism, architecture and philosophy. Attendees will find urban sounds next to sound sculptures, transformations of city sounds into compositions, the Sonic Bike Opera by Kaffe Matthews, a musical-scenic bike tour through Zagreb, works by Heiner Goebbels, Vinko Globokar, Alvin Curran, Eivind Buene, artists such as NeoQuartet and Ensemble Cikada. The programme of the 30th Music Biennale Zagreb is wide-ranging and willingly frees itself from the traditional form of classical concerts, not allowing topics such as persecution, exile, and homelessness to go unnoticed, thereby making contemporary music accessible to all ages.
