70th UNM Festival 2016

Ung Nordisk Musik Denmark, Aarhus, Denmark

2016 sees the Festival Young Nordic Music (UNM Festival) celebrate a round birthday: for 70 years the UNM has invited guests to familiarize themselves with the latest and best developments in the field of Nordic contemporary music. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation the UNM, over six days, offers its guests 35 works by 35 young composers in seven different concerts – concerts which are open to spectators free of charge. As guest composers the 2016 festival presents the internationally successful Danish composers Simon Steen-Andersen and Rasmus Zwicki. To mark the anniversary the Aarhus Sinfonietta will play older works from the festival archives, some of which date as far back as the 40s. The motto of this year’s festival is Zusammenhalt (cohesion) – the cultural region of Scandinavia is intended to serve as paradigm here for the simultaneity of diversity and tolerance beyond national borders. Nevertheless, Scandinavian musicians often experience their greatest success abroad. The UNM has set itself the task of changing this – primarily by offering young composers a platform to present their own works.
