Archipel Festival 2016: Aires de jeux

Festival Archipel, Musiques d'aujourd'hui, Geneva, Switzerland

Childhood, games, experiments, reveries – everything that characterizes creativity in its early beginnings and the free powers of imagination not yet bound by rules are at the focus of the 2016 Archipel Festival. Small children, composers who completely wind back the clock to childhood with musical toys, a whole festival day revolving around the piano in the great hall of the renovated Alhambra in Geneva: the festival is playful and the music cheerful.
The numerous symphonic concerts in 2016 are also unusual. For instance, the season opens with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and concludes with the Geneva Camerata while also featuring the orchestras of the conservatories of Geneva and Lausanne.
Here familiar works of modern symphonic music by the likes of Maurice Ravel, György Ligeti, Helmut Lachenmann, Gérard Grisey and Karlheinz Stockhausen will be performed. However, numerous premieres are also planned including those by Matthias Pintscher, Ondřej Adámek, Clara Iannotta, Alex Mincek, Carlo Ciceri and Leonardo Idrobo.
For over 20 years now Archipel has been a cornerstone of the contemporary music scene in Geneva. Once again supported by the EvS Music Foundation in 2016, the festival is open to international composers and ensembles as well as to New Music and multimedia forms like dance, video, installations and electronics. It presents many young artists on the platform of an international event – often for the first time in their lives. The festival aims not only to entertain and familiarize the audience with New Music but also foster an aspiring new music generation.
