Supported by the EvS Music Foundation on repeated occasions the New Music festival chiffren. kieler tage für neue musik will be celebrating its tenth anniversary at the 6^th Biennale 2016. On this occasion the notion of “New Music”, one so self-evident in the name of the festival, is now to be examined more closely.

With the motto “Die Linie” (The Line) the aim is to demonstrate that “new” is not just time-specific but is a criterion for the actual success of art. This overstepping of a “line” into the new and the bold can be found in present-day music production in numerous manifestations. A festival program can naturally only represent this by way of varied examples and convey it to the broad concert audience using as contrasting works as possible. The works selected for this are presented in six concerts, including a joint concert by chiffren Ensemble und Studio musikFabrik.

This “new” aspect in music is only recognizable via what already existed before it. This sometimes highly complicit ambivalence is discussed on the preparatory discussion evenings as well as in an accompanying musicological symposium open to visitors.
