Festival Archipel – Passages

The artists of Archipel discover paths which tend to connect. They dream of an ideal humanity without limits between people, generations, cultures and arts. Christian Jost crosses the Alps with Kurdish migrants in his composition. Berio mixes cultures, Stockhausen, Murail and Robin invent the augmented orchestra where technology extends the instrument. With them, Archipel 2020 follows these passages to build a civilization without demarcation, an abstract ideal of an European conscience that is still reluctant to apply it concretely. Journey to Hope, a world premiere opera, is based on the film by Xavier Koller. It tells the story of a Kurdish family who abandons its land to reach their paradise: Switzerland. Thirty years after its success the content of the film is still relevant. Migrants cross seas and mountains at the risk of their lives and break against the barriers of a retreating Europe. The music of this journey is written by Christian Jost. Other Compositions by Yann Robin, Brian Ferneyhough, Rebecca Saunders and Chiyoko Szlavnics, are conducted by Emilio Pomarico, Jonathan Nott, Clement Power and Junghae Lee. The Grand Théâtre, the Orchestre de la Suisse romande and the Haute école de musique are spreading the contemporary musical heritage with works by Stockhausen, Ligeti, Nono, Berio, Murail.
