Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2018

Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Utrecht, The Netherlands

Gaudeamus Muziekweek is a unique international festival for New Music in Utrecht that focuses on the variety, vitality and quality of the music of the younger generation of composers.

The event begins with an academy: an intense week giving the composers a generous timeframe in which to collaborate with musicians. There will be comprehensive rehearsals with ensembles as well as workshops, lectures, private tuition and discussion. The five-day festival running after this will feature concerts and presentations. The line-up here consists almost exclusively of new or more recent works by young composers at the start of an international career. This affords them a professional environment for the performance of their works at the highest level. Furthermore, they can take part in an exchange with colleagues and the audience. Of particular importance in the Gaudeamus Muziekweek program is the Gaudeamus Award. This year the jury has selected six candidates: William Dougherty (USA, *1988), Matthias Krüger (Germany, *1987), Sebastian Hilli (Finland, *1991), Lawrence Dunn (Great Britain, *1991), Raphaël Languillat (France, *1989), William Kuo (Canada, *1990). Their works include genres such as string quartet, ensembles in various compositions, musical theater, solo piano etc. Each of the six composers is presented with three works, including one for the percussion group The Hague and Ensemble Nikel. Furthermore, the audience can form an impression of the young composers in a variety of ways: in videos, concert introductions and interviews the nominees talk about their backgrounds and visions. Alongside these six composers the concert program to be presented at various locations in the center of Utrecht also features many other young composers from the Netherlands and the rest of the world.
