aDevantgarde.13 – the composers festival Munich, Germany

Under the direction of the two Munich composers Johannes X. Schachtner and Alexander Strauch the 13^th aDevantgarde Festival for New Music presents a program of eight concerts, concentrated on five festival days under the heading "humus". Humus is the soil’s organic matter in which everything living thrives and into which it throws down roots. Like in ecology, in culture what has passed then gives rise to something new. Which explains the significance of tradition in the contemporary: either new roots are thrown down along the lines of predecessors or roots deliberately break away from them – new is only new when it creates a fruitful relationship with the old, when it relates to the old or indeed when it breaks with it. On closer scrutiny, in retrospect we recognize both these link lines: which is why New Music of the post-war era arises from the trends of the Modern Age after Art Nouveau but, at the same time, breaks with the immediate past. Especially today, New Music – and its further developments in the concluding 20^th century – has itself already become the past. Founded upon this New Music is the essence of contemporary music, all too willing to cut the cord from the past while still being firmly rooted in it. Therefore, “New Music” is today’s humus of the first decade of the 21^st century which is only gradually “finding itself”. The 13^th International aDevantgarde Festival examines this phenomenon, unearthing any connections and divisions between currently active composers, searching in its own roots within the German contemporary music scene and relating itself to the roots of other traditions in contemporary music. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting this festival with 11 premieres and 21 repeat performances.
