Lucerne Festival 2019: Thomas Kessler as Composer-in-Residence

Lucerne Festival, Switzerland

This year, the Lucerne Festival introduces the Swiss composer Thomas Kessler as Composer-in-Residence, a central figure in the presentation and communication of contemporary music. This "pioneer of electronic music" will be presenting his work to a broad international audience in four concerts. With his work NGH WHT for string quartet, he sets texts by the US poet Saul Williams to music thereby juxtaposing contemporary music and rap. The composition is derived from the melodious rhythm of the human voice and hugs its breathless recitation like a dubbing soundtrack.
In the Control series, Kessler explores the interplay between various solo instruments with synthesizers, samplers and computers. Each musician controls the live electronic sound conversion for their own instrument using iPads, microphones, foot pedals and monitors.
The EvS Music Foundation will be supporting the concerts featuring Thomas Kessler's works.
