Munich Biennale 2020

Munich Biennale, Germany

Since the two composers Manos Tsangaris and Daniel Ott took over festival management in 2016, they have championed a musical theater concept which, through an open, mobile, site-specific and socially reflective idea, connects with artists of other genres across the board. In this way, the festival team has succeeded in initiating a discourse on musical theater, constantly raising new questions about the relationship between composition, staging, narrative, authorship and place of performance. For 2020, the Munich Biennale is presenting itself under the motto THE POINT OF NEW RETURN. One of the major projects to be held under this motto is Once to be performed – six experiments after Jani Christou by Beat Furrer, Barblina Meierhans, Olga Neuwirth, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Younghi Pagh-Paan and Christian Wolff (working title). The EvS Music Foundation is supporting the composition commissions issued to Neuwirth, Odeh-Tamimi, Pagh-Paan and Wolff.
The aim is to create a piece of musical theater that conveys ritual, transition, social process and communication. Forming both the point of departure and friction for this composition project are Christou's Project sketches as visionary drafts of multimedia composition.
