The Novalis music festival focuses on contemporary music, it stands for inter-disciplinarity, innovation and education and in 2021 its motto is "Migration". This is a relevant topic, especially since Eastern Croatia has lost 10% of its population through emigration since its accession to the EU in 2013.

The focus of this year's festival is the master class for young composers, which is led by the three international composers Brian Ferneyhough, Brigitta Muntendorf, Nina Šenk and the Croatian musicians Kaja Farszky, Ana Batinica and Vid Veljak. The selected composers explore the theme of migration in musical terms and their works for flute, percussion and cello will be premiered at the festival.
