rainy days – festival de musique nouvelle: Into the wild

Philharmonie Luxembourg, Luxembourg

rainy days is the annual festival of contemporary music of the Luxembourg Philharmonic. Founded in the year 2000 the festival has been hosted in the philharmonic hall since 2005. With annually changing themes, a quality approach and many cooperation partners it is an engine stimulating varied new music in the Saar/Lor/Lux region.
The 12th edition of the festival at the Philharmonic is entitled into the wild – powerful, wild and impetuous. The 2016 rainy days festival held on the first two weekends in December this time lead into contemporary tonal worlds that are anything but tame: ebullient, boundary-breaking orchestral works in two concerts with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra (OPL), free jazz, avant-rock, turntablism and wrathful chamber music, the synthetic naturalness of electronics, birds, crocodiles and the Wild West – all this unites into an eclectic, raw festival for within and without.
As always, Philharmonie Luxembourg forms the diverse base camp for rainy days. The Grand Théâtre, both contemporary art museums in Luxembourg (Mudam and Casino) and Neumünster Abbey are festival partners in 2016. Furthermore, this time also sees excursions of adventure to the untidy edges of the city, to wastelands, crags and industrial ruins or the inevitable shopping malls in the frenzy of the run-up to Christmas. Not only in relation to the performance locations but also with the selected performers and works the festival audience will this time be invited to the wild edges of the broad field of contemporary music. Because when music of the present day goes out into the open it is not far to go to free jazz collectives, avant-garde rock and performance art – where the recent Grammy winner OPL and the ever highly cultivated ensemble recherche can at last be allowed to enter into feats of strength and outbursts of rage. As in previous years, the festival will be supported in 2016 by the EvS Music Foundation.
