Stockhausenfestival

To mark its 70th anniversary in 2015 Bavarian Broadcasting’s musica viva will be presenting a festival dedicated to the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen. Featuring six concerts it will – for the first time in the history of musica viva – be combined with an academy that is devoted to the works presented in the concerts and aimed at young students, young professional conductors and pianists on the international music scene as well as at musicians of the Bavarian Youth Orchestra. The academy will teach orchestra, conducting and piano practice.

At the heart of the festival and academy will be the orchestral composition Hymnen (3. Region). Elektronische Musik mit Orchester, a Munich debut, as well as many of Stockhausen’s other epoch-making, yet until now only rarely or never performed compositions. Supervision and conducting of the symphony orchestra come care of Peter Eötvös who was Stockhausen’s assistant during the work’s genesis and premiere in 1969 which was performed by the New York Philharmonic.
On the occasion of the Munich debut Peter Eötvös will be sharing his know-how and experiences with the young music generation as part of an orchestral and conducting academy led by him. He will also present Hymnen mit Orchester in a production with the Bavarian Youth Orchestra as part of an academy matinee at musica viva’s Stockhausen Festival.
Hailing from the Pierre Boulez school and also working closely with Karlheinz Stockhausen, French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard will present the catalog of Stockhausen’s piano works to the international music scene as part of musica viva’s festival for the first time in his own interpretation.
