Vexierbilder – Dufour: Tiepolo Cycle

At the focus of the 2016 Witten Days for New Chamber Music (Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik) is the relationship between music and images within various forms and contexts. For this a series of audio-visual works is planned. Its spectrum ranges from video and concert installations, music with images through to the combinations of silent film and live music.

For instance, Brigitta Muntendorf – together with the sculptor Thomas Bismarck – is developing an installation that reflects the phenomenon of surveillance: a mobile construction suspended in a room in which several – both real and fake – cameras are set up. To accompany this, pieces from Muntendorf’s work series Public Privacy will be performed that explore the dialectics between the private and public sphere and, on each occasion, shift a musician centerstage. The compositions deal with the aspect of cover versions making the living room a public place and focalizing the genesis process of music at the same time.

Like with Muntendorf’s works, a musician is at the focus of each of Adriana Hölszky and Jesper Nordin’s interventive installations. Uli Aumüller’s installation is devoted to three works that will be premiered as part of the 2016 chamber music festival: compositions by Birke Bertelsmeier, who is writing a solo for Tabea Zimmermann; by Gérard Pesson, who will be composing for Trio Catch; and by Enno Poppe, who will be collaborating with Quatuor Diotima.

The EvS Music Foundation is supporting the work of Hugues Dufourt who will be participating in Witten with his work in progress Tiepolo Cycle.

This and many others in the presentations thrive on the intense collaboration between composers and performers as well as on the chamber music dialog which is a key aspect of the festival supported by the EvS Music Foundation. Some of the works will be presented at unusual locations to also appeal to local audiences that might otherwise scarcely notice the festival.
