72nd Spring Conference on the Topic: “Erkundungen. Gegenwartsmusik als Forschung und Experiment” (Explorations. Present-Day Music as Research and Experiments)

Institut für Neue Musik und Musikerziehung e.V. (INMM), Darmstadt, Germany

The conference in Darmstadt focuses on the tendency of many contemporary composers to see their creativity as a specific form of research. This way of viewing themselves gives rise to varied problems that are not just relevant for the internal specialist discourse but which also, beyond this, shed new light on the old question of the social relevance of present day music. As part of the conference supported by the EvS Music Foundation the most varied facets of a “researching” approach to composition are elaborated and critically discussed. The breadth of the existing approaches that also include cross references to other arts demands an interdisciplinary approach. This is undertaken in an exchange with composers such as Peter Ablinger, Marko Ciciliani, Chaya Czernowin, Enno Poppe and Caspar Johannes Walter as well as renowned musicologists like Dieter Mersch, Judith Siegmund, Philipp Schäffler, Julia Kursell or Roman Brotbeck. The lectures and discussions are complemented by educational workshops as well as concerts by renowned performers.
