The Archive of the Schweizerischer Tonkünstlerverein – Indexing and Preparation of Long-Term Archiving

Bern University of the Arts/Hochschule der Künste Bern, Switzerland

Founded in 1900 the Swiss Association of Musicians (Schweizerischer Tonkünstlerverein – STV) was largely responsible for the development of contemporary music in the country. After federal subsidies ceased, the association had to merge with other professional associations of musicians. Archive preservation and accessibility are of utmost relevance and urgency. Following the exploratory preparatory study supported by the EvS Music Foundation, the task now is to make the archive of the Swiss Association of Musicians accessible as the most important source for the development of contemporary music in Switzerland from 1900-2017, to record and partly digitize the holdings and to prepare for long-term preservation in the Bibliothèque cantonale et unversitaire de Lausanne / Archives musicales, which has agreed to take over the archive. This comprehensive indexing (to run until the end of 2020), which is in turn supported by the EVS Music Foundation, is an essential prerequisite for musicological research into the archive so as to enable a wider appreciation of music in Switzerland since 1900.
