Bernd Alois Zimmermann: Composing at the Media Crossroads

Bernd-Alois-Zimmermann-Gesellschaft e.V., Hürth, Germany

Supported by the EvS Music Foundation this musicology symposium in Cologne focuses on the interweaving of the tonal with other disciplines and the media so characteristic for the work of Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918–1970): film, theater, fine arts, literature, language, dance, electronic music and audio plays. Also offered alongside musicology lectures will be several audio and film presentations, panel discussions as well as two concerts relating to the symposium involving students or former graduates of Cologne’s music and dance academy Hochschule für Musik und Tanz (HfMT Köln) that is also a cooperation partner.

In 2018, the year of Zimmermann’s 100th birthday, the varied aspects of his creativity are to be emphatically pushed into the center of musicological discourse. For the analysis, interpretation, reflection and categorization of Zimmermann’s work within the context of its complex media links an invitation has been extended to musicologists, composers and musicians such as Prof. Dr. Rainer Nonnenmann, Prof. Dr. Oliver Korte, Prof. Dr. Arnold Jacobshagen, Prof. Dr. Dörte Schmidt, Prof. Adriana Hölzsky, Prof. Wolfgang Rihm and Lisa Streich.
