New Musical Theater in Italy: 1950 – 1975

Fondazione Giorgio Cini – Istituto per la musica, Venice, Italy

Between 1950 and 1975 Italian composers made a key contribution to the development of musical theater. Of relevance here are not just renowned composers like Luciano Berio, Sylvano Bussotti, Bruno Maderna or Luigi Nono. Lesser known composers also played a role in the development of new forms. Focusing on this phase from the middle of the last century is a three-year research project initiated by Fondazione Giorgio Cini and supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Forming the focal point of the project is a source-related examination of works, events and institutions that are connected to the development of new forms of musical theater. Key here are those sources that are stored in the foundation’s Music Institute. In its first year the project kicks off with a conference that is documented in image and text. In the second year individual studies of the sources will be at the forefront which will lead to a publication and also contribute to preparations for a workshop to be held in the third year.
