Positions – Texts on Contemporary Music

Positions, Berlin, Germany

POSITIONS – Texts on Contemporary Music discusses and reflects on contemporary music and cultural creation in the German-speaking and international arena. Founded in 1988 by Gisela Nauck and Armin Köhler in Leipzig in then East Germany, the magazine presents essays, portraits, interviews and specials in thematically oriented issues as well as a variety of "positions": discourse-oriented reviews of publications, festivals, concerts or installations as well as music-specific events, for instance in the visual arts, fashion or performance.

The Berlin-based magazine is published quarterly in print. Individual articles and reviews are also published online. To facilitate international discourse, many texts are also translated into German for publication in POSITIONEN. POSITIONEN aims to further strengthen debate and the role of criticism, thereby building a bridge between academic music research and journalism. With the aim of supporting future generations of authors, the two editors regularly organize writing workshops in cooperation with festivals or universities.

Since 2019, POSITIONEN has been managed and published by the new editorial team of Andreas Engström and Bastian Zimmermann and supported by a Berlin-based team of creatives and an international group of correspondents.
