Lachenmann Perspektiven

Music of the Centuries, Stuttgart, Germany

Helmut Lachenmann, one of the most important and internationally acclaimed composers of our times, celebrated his 80th birthday in November 2015. Around the globe numerous festivals and portrait concerts were devoted to the artist who has set an example for generations of artists for over 40 years with his differentiated tonal world and notion of art that consistently challenges society.
As part of these honors the LACHENMANN PERSPECTIVES form a highlight with the performance of all Helmut Lachenmann’s orchestral works. 15 European symphony orchestras will be taking part in this complete performance. Between January 2015 and Summer 2016 Helmut Lachenmann’s 18 orchestral works will be performed in festivals or concert series of New Music as well as in normal subscription concerts. The composer will be present at all rehearsals and performances.
The intense cooperation with the orchestras is documented in a film receiving the support of the EvS Music Foundation. Filmmaker Wiebke Poepel, who has extensive experience with New Music, will record rehearsals and performances of eight exemplary projects with her film team. These will document the unique collaboration of the composer and musicians and their exploration of contemporary music. Furthermore, they will describe Lachenmann’s orchestral work and record key information for the works’ performance practice and playing techniques for musical posterity. Interviews with musicians, conductors and with the composer himself will shed light on the aesthetic and musical historic background of the works.
