Portrait Rebecca Saunders 2022

This artistic residency of Rebecca Saunders includes nine pieces by the composer, two of them new works, intending to present to the Portuguese audience the variety of Saunders’ output. It features both chamber and orchestral music; experts in contemporary music like Peter Rundel, Baldur Brönnimann, Ryan Wigglesworth, and Sylvain Cambreling will conduct the repertoire. Prominent soloists who specialise in modern-day music feature in this retrospective. Juliet Fraser, Christian Dierstein, Dirk Rothbrust, Noa Frenkel, Carolin Widmann, Ilya Gringolts, and Ales Klancar perform with the in-house ensembles and soloists of Casa da Música. To engage with the musical thought of Saunders, the musicians will attend workshop sessions before the rehearsals and concerts. They aim to prepare them to perform her works in the highest artistic result. Saunders will be a part of this process, attending most of the working sessions and concerts.
The organisers carefully selected the repertoire in dialogue with Saunders to represent fundamental points of her creative approach and give the audience a global assessment of her career. With this season-long portrait Casa da Música is continuing a strong relationship with Rebecca Saunders and her music lasting since 2009 when Casa da Música first commissioned a piece to the composer.
Casa da Música has ever since been the leading institution in commissioning and performing Saunders’ works in Portugal.
