Composition Commission issued to Jean Guillou

Euro-Via Festival, Eching am Ammersee, Germany

Since 2005 under the “Euro-Via Festival” brand the society Verein Festival e.V. has organized several classical concert series especially devoted to organ music, though also comprising choral and orchestral concerts, too. The Latin component VIA here signals the experience potential of a musical “peregrination” along ancient European pilgrimage routes and paths. In this way the Euro-Via Festival links together churches and towns of art historical significance and through its concerts allows avid international and intercultural exchange between artists, the audience and local organizing cooperation partners. 2011 sees the scope of Euro-Via Festival “From Rome to Santiago” being extended considerably with focal points in Bavaria, Portugal, the South of France and Spain. Once again it will feature concerts with top notch organ performers as well as with other instrumentalists, choirs and orchestras. This time the festival will trace a path along the historical Way of St James. It will include outstanding locations, churches and concert halls such as the Castle of Neuschwanstein and the Munich Philharmonic in Bavaria, the cathedrals of Lausanne, Toulouse and Porto as well as locations in Spain like Barcelona, Burgos, Leon and finally Santiago de Compostela as its final destination in 2012.
A  prestigious highpoint of the Euro-Via Festival 2012 will be a concert by legendary organ virtuoso Jean Guillou at the Berlin Philharmonic alongside its great organ event  “La Révolte des Orgues” for 9 organs and percussion. The concert evening will be completed with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt and D. Scarlatti. With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation a premiere will also be held for another of Jean Guillou’s compositions for four-handed organ and 2 percussionists.
