Composition Commission to Torres Maldonado

Festival Internacional Cervantino, Mexico City, Mexico

The „Festival Internacional Cervantino“ in Mexico City is one of the most relevant contemporary music events in America. This year, for the first time in Mexico, the festival will present a concert of the ensemble Klangforum Wien. The international program will feature a modern repertoire of high artistic quality that includes works by Giacinto Scelsi, Georg Friedrich Haas and Nicola Sani. Furthermore, the Klangforum Wien was asked to elect a Mexican composer for a composition commission, resulting in Javier Torres Maldonado, winner of various international honors and one of the leading Mexican composers of his generation, being chosen to write a new piece for large ensemble which will approach the work of Miguel de Cervantes “El Quijote” and adapt it to the modernity of our time. The composition commission is supported by the EvS Musikstiftung. In the past, Torres Maldonado has created different works as composer in residence, collaborating with important European institutes for acoustics and music research.
