Composition Commission issued to Wolfgang Rihm

Philharmonie Essen, Germany

Marking the tenth anniversary of the founding of Philharmonie Essen a festival concert and two subsequent concerts will look back on 100 years of philharmonic tradition and ten years of pioneering programming. Composers like Jörg Widmann, Georg Friedrich Haas or Maurizio Kagel were commissioned during this first decade and numerous debut performances were held. At the anniversary concert under the baton of Thomás Netopil the Essen Philharmonic will interpret the work that opened this hall dating from 1904, the Sinfonia domestica by Richard Strauss, along with his Präludium für Orgel und Orchester, played on the famous Kuhn organ. Both works will be juxtaposed with one of Wolfgang Rihm’s compositions commissioned by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and composed by Rihm especially for this programmatic context. This festival concert will once again highlight the Philharmonic’s motto: that of forming a bridge between the past and the present while setting an example for the future.
