Composition Commissions issued to Edwards,Gander, Takasugi, and Ulivelli for Salt Festival

Ensemble Tsilumos, Victoria, BC, Canada

Tsilumos is a new music ensemble based in Victoria, BC Canada. Formed in 2011, the ensemble is co-directed by members Dániel Péter Biró, Ajtony Csaba, Kris Covlin and Joanna Hood. The ensemble performs chamber music ranging from duos to large instrumental combinations. Its main objective is to give new works an optimal performance regardless of technical difficulty, intellectual demands or compositional style. Since its inception the ensemble has brought high quality, challenging new music to the larger Canadian community and beyond. In 2012–2013 the Tsilumos Ensemble will perform commissioned works from Steven Kazuo Takasugi (USA) Wolf Edwards (Canada), Bernhard Gander (Austria), and Gianluca Ulivelli (Italy) during the SALT Festival at Open Space in Victoria, BC, Canada. Steven Takasugi will create a new work for electronics and ensemble wherein the ensemble musicians will attempt to duplicate the perfection of the accompanying electronics, thereby becoming alienated from their sonorous surroundings. Wolf Edwards, who is no stranger to the world of music and politics, will write a work for Tsilumos Ensemble that will investigate the power struggle between individual musicians, spatialized throughout the hall, and musicians on the stage. Bernhard Gander‘s composition will explore the complex layering of polyrhythms across instrumentatal groups. Gianluca Ulivelli will compose a new work for the ensemble wherein the poetry of Paul Celan becomes part of an abstract sonorous texture. The four composition commissions will be funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
